Philip Glass Premiere!

Philip Glass - by Steve Pyke

Peter is delighted to be conducting the UK premiere of Philip Glass's Symphony No.8 on Sunday 12 March.  The piece was chose because it fitted well wit the other music in the programme and it wasn't realised that it will be a UK premiere until after the first rehearsal!  The music contains some of the trademarks of Glass's minimalistic style (driving/overlapping rhythms), but also contains some very atmospheric and gentle music.  An evening not to be missed.  The symphony is preceded by Wagner's heart-rending Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde with fine Wagnerian soprano Zoe South, and Webern's Passcaglia - his incredibly powerful opus 1, where he was pushing on from the legacy of Mahler to try to find his own musical language.  The Glass will be accompanied by 'mood lighting' by Paul Flook.
