Rameau opera success

Last weekend St John's Church in Waterloo, London saw two remarkable performances of Rameau's opera Hippolyte et Aricie. A cast of around 75 - 10 soloists, a chorus (6 Centuries Chamber Choir), a band (Linden Baroque) and a group of dancers (Chelsea Ballet) packed the church with Rameau's wonderfully eclectic mix of music. Two good-sized audiences enjoyed everything from the most delicate of arias accompanied by just 2 or 3 instruments to rousing choruses employing our full forces! How many times has a Rameau opera been put on by a principally amateur group - and at such a high standard! An enormous well-done to all involved! When the dust settles I wonder which opera will grab me next ...
