Ethel Smyth

Peter is currently editing two works by English composer Ethel Smyth - her Symphonie für kleines Orchester and the overture to her first opera, Fantasio. It has been interesting to discover that there are significant works by this important composer which have never been published, and hardly, if ever, performed. Perhaps the largest of all is indeed that first opera, Fantasio, which has never been performed since the 2nd performance in Smyth's lifetime, 1901. It has also never been performed in Great Britain, never recorded, and there is no extant score available. Peter is, therefore, currently exploring the possibility of doing a PhD on the opera, which would include preparing an edition.
